Nike has backed Ronaldo since 2003, when he was an 18-year-old at Manchester United, and converted the relationship into a lifetime contract in 2016 — reported at more than $1 billion over its life. The headline is widely misread. The "$1 billion" is a lifetime aggregate, not an annual payment.
