Gross, net and why the numbers look inconsistent

Spanish and Italian contracts are negotiated and reported net of tax, English and Saudi ones gross. A €31 million net Juventus salary cost the club roughly €64 million gross; a €200 million Saudi salary costs Al Nassr €200 million because there is no personal income tax to gross up for. Where we quote annual pay above, we say which basis each figure uses.

Why did the fees fall as the wages climbed?

Every fee above was paid to a selling club, never to Ronaldo. Real Madrid paid a world-record €94 million in 2009 for a 24-year-old and then held him at €21 million net until the 2016 renewal lifted it to €23 million, with image rights split between player and club. By 2021 the balance had tipped. Manchester United paid €15 million and roughly £385,000 a week, and the deal ended by mutual consent in November 2022. Al Nassr paid no fee at all, so the whole budget went to the player: ~$200 million a year tax-free, then an extension carrying a $34 million signing bonus and 15% of the club.
